HubSpot AEO: The Answer Engine Optimization Tool, Explained
September 16, 2026
HubSpot AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) tracks how often your brand shows up when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity a question, then recommends content to close the gaps. It is a HubSpot-labeled beta feature built on the technology from HubSpot's 2025 XFunnel acquisition. It comes free with Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, or you can buy it on its own for $50 a month with no other HubSpot subscription required.
AVAILABLE ON
Included with Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. Also sold as a standalone HubSpot AEO subscription for any business, HubSpot customer or not.
COST
Standalone: $50/month ($45 on annual billing), 25 prompts across 3 engines. More prompts run $20/month per 10. Turning a recommendation into a generated blog post costs 1,000 HubSpot Credits on top.
BEFORE YOU START
Your real brand name variations, domain, and competitor list. Marketing Access permissions (or a standalone AEO account). For content generation, a Super Admin has to flip several AI Settings toggles first.
What is HubSpot AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization, and it is the SEO-adjacent discipline of making sure your brand shows up correctly when someone asks an AI assistant a question instead of typing it into Google. HubSpot's AEO tool is its native way to measure and act on that: it tracks a set of prompts your buyers might ask, checks how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answer them, and reports whether your brand got mentioned, how it was described, and which sources those engines cited.
The product has a short, traceable history. HubSpot acquired an Israeli AEO startup called XFunnel in late 2025, and AEO shipped as a public beta at HubSpot's Spring Spotlight event on April 14, 2026. As of this page's last fact-check, HubSpot's own knowledge base still tags every AEO article Beta, so treat the tool as evolving, not finished. HubSpot also sells three narrower, free-standing tools worth knowing apart from AEO itself: the AEO Grader is a one-time, no-signup visibility snapshot; the AI Search Sensor tracks industry-wide AI visibility trends without showing your own brand's numbers; and full HubSpot AEO is the ongoing, brand-specific tracker this page covers.
How does HubSpot AEO work?
Setup runs from Marketing > AEO in your HubSpot account, and it walks through four steps that decide the quality of everything downstream:
- Brand details. Your brand name, domain, and every real name variation people actually use (comma-separated, case-sensitive).
- Competitors. The brands AEO benchmarks you against in the same prompt results.
- Products and ICPs. What you sell and who buys it. Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise accounts get these generated from real business context; standalone accounts enter them by hand.
- Prompts. HubSpot suggests 8 to 15 prompts at a time from the brand, competitor, product, and ICP details, and you edit, add, or remove before tracking starts.
Once tracking starts, AEO runs every tracked prompt daily across all three engines and rolls the results into a dashboard: brand visibility (the percent of prompts where you show up at all), share of voice against competitors, sentiment, and citation analysis showing which domains, pages, and content formats the engines actually referenced. From there, a Recommendations tab turns citation gaps into a prioritized list of content to create or fix, tagged by type (net new content, update content, site audit finding, social amplification, outreach) with an estimated citation-lift score.
What does HubSpot AEO cost, tier by tier?
The three ways to get it track the same brand visibility, prompt tracking, competitor analysis, and citation data. What differs is prompt volume and what you can do with a recommendation once you have it:
HubSpot AEO (standalone) - $50/mo
25 prompts, 3 engines, 2,500 answers a month. $45/mo on annual billing. No other HubSpot subscription needed.
Gets you: visibility, prompt tracking, competitor and citation analysis, recommendations. Does not include in-app blog generation or CRM-informed prompt suggestions.
Marketing Hub Professional
Same 25 prompts and 2,500 answers a month, included in the subscription at no extra charge.
Adds: CRM-informed prompt suggestions and one-click blog and LinkedIn post generation from recommendations (1,000 HubSpot Credits per generated blog post).
Marketing Hub Enterprise
50 prompts, 3 engines, 5,000 answers a month, included in the subscription.
Same content-generation features as Professional, at double the prompt and answer ceiling.
Need more room than your tier's ceiling? An AEO Answers Limit Increase adds 10 prompts and 1,000 more monthly answers for $20/month, stackable, on any of the three options above.
What does AEO do for your business?
The honest pitch is visibility plus a to-do list. Before AEO, most teams had no idea whether ChatGPT recommended them or a competitor when a buyer asked "best CRM for a 20-person sales team" or whatever their category's version of that question is. AEO answers that, then tells you specifically what to publish, update, or fix to close the gap: a comparison page a competitor's page is winning, a missing FAQ, a Reddit thread worth engaging honestly, a third-party site worth a mention request. If your buyers are researching with AI at all, that combination of a number and an action list is worth having.
Who it is NOT for right now, honestly:
- Teams wanting a mature, stable product. It is beta software from a company HubSpot bought less than a year ago; expect the recommendation quality, prompt suggestions, and limits to keep changing.
- Anyone who needs to track more than a handful of high-value questions right now. 25 or 50 prompts sounds like a lot until you try to cover every product line, region, and buyer stage at once.
- Businesses expecting AEO to replace ordinary SEO or content strategy. It measures and nudges; it does not write your positioning or fix a thin content library on its own.
How Hubjoy sets up and runs AEO
AEO is brand new enough that there is no long client track record to lean on yet. This is the setup order and judgment calls we apply when a client's portal is eligible, built from HubSpot's own documentation and from reading what practitioners are actually running into on it:
- Check the access path first. Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise already includes it; anyone else needs the standalone $50/month subscription or the 28-day trial. We confirm which one before promising a client anything.
- Get the brand setup exactly right. Every real name variation the brand actually goes by, the correct domain, and a competitor list built from who the client loses deals to, not who they wish they competed with. A sloppy setup here makes every number downstream meaningless.
- Rewrite the suggested prompts before we track them. HubSpot auto-generates 8 to 15 prompts per round, and practitioners on Reddit describe the defaults as repetitive and sometimes subpar. We treat the suggestions as a starting draft and replace the generic ones with the actual questions we hear on discovery calls.
- Spend the prompt budget on decisions, not vanity. With only 25 or 50 slots, we prioritize prompts closest to a buying decision (comparison and "best X for Y" questions) over broad awareness questions that a client's ordinary SEO already covers.
- Turn on content generation deliberately, not by default. Generating a blog post from a recommendation needs a Super Admin to enable several AI Settings toggles and burns 1,000 HubSpot Credits per post from the same shared pool other AI features draw from. We treat every generated draft as a first pass a human edits before it publishes, never an auto-publish.
- Run the loop weekly, not daily. Answer engine responses shift day to day; HubSpot's own guidance is to judge trends over multiple days or weeks, not react to a single day's dip. We check the dashboard on a fixed weekly cadence and act on the Recommendations tab, not on noise.
The gotcha we watch for: AEO tracks one owned domain per setup. A client running multiple brands or a marketing site separate from their app needs either prompt groups or HubSpot's Brands add-on to track each one properly, and skipping that step quietly muddies the visibility numbers for both brands at once.
Frequently asked questions
How much does HubSpot AEO cost?
$50 a month standalone ($45 on annual billing) for 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, 2,500 tracked answers a month. It is included at no extra cost with Marketing Hub Professional (same 25-prompt limit) and Marketing Hub Enterprise (50 prompts, 5,000 answers a month). Extra prompt capacity is $20/month per 10 prompts on any plan. Generating a blog post from a recommendation costs 1,000 HubSpot Credits on top, and that action only exists on Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise.
Do I need Marketing Hub Professional to use AEO?
No. You can buy HubSpot AEO on its own for $50/month with no other HubSpot subscription, or start with the 28-day free trial. Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise get you the same tracking plus CRM-informed prompt suggestions and one-click content generation, which the standalone product does not include.
What is the difference between HubSpot AEO, the AEO Grader, and the AI Search Sensor?
The AEO Grader is a free, one-time snapshot: enter your brand and get a single visibility score and a few sample recommendations, no signup or ongoing tracking. The AI Search Sensor is a free, continuous tracker of industry-wide AEO trends across major players, but it never shows your own brand's numbers. HubSpot AEO (this page) is the ongoing, brand-specific product: ongoing prompt tracking, your own visibility score over time, citation analysis, and recommendations tied to your CRM and content.
Is HubSpot AEO still in beta?
Yes, as of this page's last fact-check. It launched as a public beta on April 14, 2026, built on the technology HubSpot acquired with XFunnel in late 2025, and HubSpot's own documentation still labels every AEO article Beta. Expect the prompt limits, recommendation quality, and packaging to keep changing while it is in this stage.
How many prompts can I track, and is that enough?
25 prompts on the standalone product and Marketing Hub Professional, 50 on Enterprise, each run daily across all three engines, plus $20/month per 10 additional prompts. Whether that is enough depends on how many products, regions, and buying-stage questions you need covered. Some practitioners on Reddit describe the ceiling as limiting for a broad catalog and say they source additional prompt ideas from outside HubSpot while still using AEO for the tracking itself.
Are the auto-suggested prompts any good?
Mixed, by user report. Some practitioners have called the default suggestions repetitive or subpar and prefer to write their own from real buyer language; others say following the suggested prompts drove real early gains once they trusted the process for a few weeks. Treat the auto-generated list as a first draft, not a finished prompt set.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO measures and prioritizes a different channel (how AI answer engines mention and cite you) rather than replacing traditional search-ranking work. The two overlap heavily: content that ranks well and answers questions clearly tends to get cited by answer engines too, and AEO's own recommendations frequently point back to ordinary content and technical SEO fixes.
Is HubSpot AEO worth it compared to a standalone AEO tool?
The clearest advantage users report is workflow integration: recommendations connect straight to HubSpot's content and social tools instead of leaving you with a static PDF report to act on manually. If you already run Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, that included tracking plus in-app content generation is hard to beat for the price. If you need broader prompt coverage, deeper source-level detail, or you are not on HubSpot at all, it is worth comparing against dedicated AEO platforms before committing.
